Laird had been in Nashville for some time before he pulled off his highly publicized publicity stunt in 2008. It was a billboard-sized photographic image of Laird holding a handwritten note that read: Hey Taylor I love your music. Will you produce my album?

Laird wasnt fooling around. He loved Taylor Swifts stuff, just as he loved the boundary pushing music of the Dixie Chicks, Keith Urban and Shania Twain. And he was serious about enlisting Swift as his producer. Swift later acknowledged Lairds gift for singing and songwriting, and predicted big things for the Fergus lad.

Musical success, Laird said in an interview on Sunday, is a slow, hard-working journey. He has been based in Nashville for the past seven years, where he writes songs, many of them written in collaboration with others.

Raised on a small beef farm near Belwood, just outside Fergus, the country genre was in the air he breathed as a boy and it was a natural fit for him musically.

While his great grandmother was a noted opera singer, Laird played country in fall fairs and rural hoedowns as a teenager. He has been at the music-making thing for most of his life, and gave guitar lessons all through high school to earn money for college and travel to Nashville.

I think this last year was a good one for me. I got my first charting, top 10 song on the radio, and I started to get out and tour, and get a music video on CMT, he added, speaking of Im Your Man.

But I cant think of it only in the last year, or as an overnight kind of thing. I did my first record locally here in Fergus when I was about 13 years old, and started writing my own songs when I was performing locally at the fall fair and beef barbecues. Its been a journey.

Laird will visit Mitchell Woods Public School in Guelph on Friday afternoon to speak with students about following their dreams, as well as talking about his personal experience being bullied as a kid. The graduate of Centre Wellington District High School will also perform some of his tunes, including one called Hey Ashley, which is about a bully.

When youre at that stage of your life, bullying is a really big burden to overcome, and you think your whole world can collapse on you at some points when youre a kid, he said. But later in life you grow up and see that there are ways to learn from that. My outlet was through song writing.

While he has written hundreds of songs, he never tires of songwriting and is always trying to improve on the craft. The more you do something, the better you get at it.

Riding the success of his two singles last year She Was the One also did well he hopes to have a full album out in the first half of 2012, and to tour extensively after that. His dream is to tour the world, much like his idol, Bryan Adams.

I knew what I wanted to do since I was a little kid, and I just sort of started chasing it at a young age, added Laird. s very satisfying, because when you love what you do, and I do love what I do, then every day is a new adventure.

The song was inspired by my brother Brett and his now girlfriend Shannon. They dated all through high school and then he broke up with her when they both went off to college. A few years down the road, he wanted her back, so he came to me for advice. I told him I'd write him a song for her. They are now happily back together. Not married yet, but then again, they are still young.
